MedTech Actuator and North Durham Academy Launch ‘Origin Academy UK’ to Inspire Young Health Innovators

Global health innovation leader MedTech Actuator has partnered with North Durham Academy to launch the Origin Academy UK – a dynamic programme designed to spark creativity, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship among secondary school students.

During July 2025, Origin Academy UK invited students to tackle pressing global health challenges by developing innovative solutions. Through hands-on workshops and mentorship, participants gained exposure to the world of medical research, clinical insights, and healthtech innovation.

The program culminated in a pitch-style showcase, where the winning team have now been successful in securing travel to Osaka, Japan in September 2025 to present at the MedTech Actuator International Showcase and attend Expo 2025 – a global celebration of innovation and future thinking.

“Origin Academy is about giving young people the tools, the confidence, and the opportunity to imagine solutions to some of the world’s biggest healthcare problems,” said Dr. Buzz Palmer, CEO of MedTech Actuator. “We’re proud to launch this in my home county of Durham, and we’re excited to see what the next generation can achieve.”

Mrs. Linda Rodham, CEO, New College Durham Academies Trust, added:

We are immensely proud of our students for their remarkable achievement on the global stage. Their innovative thinking, commitment to tackling real world health challenges and the ability to collaborate under pressure reflect the very best of what our Trust strives to nurture. Winning this prestigious global health programme – and earning the amazing opportunity to showcase their solution in Osaka – is not only a testament to their talent, but also a powerful reminder of the impact young minds can have when empowered to lead. We look forward to seeing them continue to inspire and drive change far beyond the classroom

Mr Mark Gray, Head Teacher of North Durham Academy, added:

“We were absolutely thrilled to bring such a unique opportunity to our students. Origin Academy UK will challenge them to think globally and creatively, and to see themselves as future leaders in healthcare and innovation. The chance to represent the UK on a global stage is extraordinary, and we are actively seeking local support to help make this dream a reality for the successful team of students.”

To make this experience accessible, local sponsors are being sought to support the students’ travel to Japan. Businesses, community organisations, and health sector leaders are invited to be part of this unique initiative – helping put Durham’s youth on the global innovation stage.
