Consett Academy Student Wins International Prize in The Economist’s Topical Talk Festival
The Philosophy and Religion Department at Consett Academy is thrilled to announce its first participation in The Economist’s Topical Talk Festival—and with it, an international prize win!
As part of the Festival, some of the Year 9 students at Consett Academy engaged in weekly discussions on major global issues, from artificial intelligence and women in space to the Syrian conflict and the influence of Elon Musk. Students then joined online conversations with peers from around the world, including countries such as the United States, Israel, Nigeria, and India.
Two students, Hannah N and Maximo, went on to submit “Standpoint” opinion pieces, drawing on their critical thinking and global awareness. Hannah explored the impact of Elon Musk’s growing influence, while Maximo tackled the complex future of Syria in the aftermath of the Assad regime.
We are incredibly proud to share that Maximo’s piece was selected winner in the Syria category by The Economist’s Middle East Editor. Out of over 400 submissions from 19 countries, Maximo was the only UK student to receive a prize—a truly remarkable achievement!
The Festival featured only five winning categories, making Maximo’s success even more impressive. His work stood out for its powerful analysis, persuasive argumentation, and deep empathy—qualities that clearly resonated with the judges.
A well-deserved congratulations to Maximo, who has not only showcased the exceptional talent within Consett Academy but also put our school on the international stage.
