Celebrating 115 Years of Beamish School: A Community Steeped in History

Beamish School reached a remarkable milestone this week as it celebrated its 115th anniversary — a moment that brought together generations of students, staff, families, and members of the local community. As part of the celebrations, the school opened its doors for a special event that invited former pupils and colleagues to return, reconnect, and see how the school has evolved while honouring its extraordinary past.

Visitors were welcomed with displays created by current students, each one exploring a different chapter of the school’s long and eventful history. These exhibits highlighted the many defining moments the building has witnessed since opening its doors in 1911.
Students delved into stories of resilience during the Second World War, including accounts of bombs falling nearby. They explored the school’s role in celebrating national milestones such as royal jubilees, and reflected on the more recent challenges of the COVID‑19 pandemic.

The result was a thoughtful and engaging showcase that demonstrated not only the school’s longevity, but also the strength and spirit of the Beamish community across generations.

The celebrations continue later this week with a full-school transformation. Students and staff will dress in period clothing to recreate the atmosphere of 1911 — the year the school first opened.

Teachers will be wearing costumes specially tailored by Beamish Museum, whose team will also join the school on the day. They will lead discussions and activities that help children understand what life was like in the early 20th century, offering a vivid and memorable learning experience.

The anniversary has been a testament to the dedication of staff and students, who worked tirelessly to create an event worthy of the school’s rich heritage. Their efforts brought history to life and reminded everyone why Beamish School holds such a special place in the heart of its community.

After 115 years, one message rang clear throughout the celebrations:
there really is no place like Beamish School.
